When the weekend rolls around in Ottawa, you can whip up a mean meal in your kitchen, but sometimes you need to give your appliances a break, call up your friends and head off for everyone’s favourite pastime – brunch!

Café Ninety7 – When you want the feeling of home, without actually staying home head to Café Ninety7 (97 Main St) where organic fair trade coffee and classic breakfast options fuel you for the day. If you’re not looking for a full meal, grab a Peach Smoothie, or Mochachino for a sweet treat before you head off downtown. For something with a bit more substance, their Hand Crafted Oatmeal and Omelette on a Bagel will have you fuelled and friendly for the weekend ahead.

Flapjacks – Calling all sweet tooths, Flapjacks (809 Bank St.) is the sugar spot to tick off your dentist. The theme is pancakes, but the best part is the customization. Choose your pancake batter (buttermilk or oatmeal) and then add fillings like blueberries, white chocolate or bacon crumble. For those who want a truly Canadian breakfast, Flapjacks also offers Poutine.

Canal Ritz – Grab your Sunday best and head to the Rideau Canal for brunch. With scenic views, the Canal Ritz (375 Queen Elizabeth Drive) may have you rubbing elbows with a few tourists, however their Italian cuisine will have you dreaming of a Roman Holiday. The Breakfast Pizza with scrambled eggs, pancetta bacon and fontina cheese is the next best thing to going to Italy.

The Lieutenant’s Pump – For a walk in the shoes of the Royals, try the Lieutenant’s Pump. A classic British pub on 361 Elgin Street, this one-stop-brunch-spot will draw you in with their sunshine patio views (weather permitting). Their breakfast starts bright and early (8:30 a.m.) and we recommend trying their Sourdough French Toast in strawberry banana or cinnamon sugar (we still can’t choose). For those who want a hearty dish, the Huevos Rancheros brings the heat with a flour tortilla filled with jalapenos and bacon infused black beans.
