In Ottawa, we don’t just survive winter, we embrace it! Bask in the fun that comes along with the cold weather this season, and add these activities to your winter bucket-list.

1. Celebrate the Chill at Winterlude

When the peak of the cold weather season arrives, Ottawans throw a party. Each year the city celebrates Winterlude, an annual festival that celebrates all things winter. From January 29 to February 15 take part in citywide activities like ice sculpting competitions, food festivals, an outdoor beer fest, and playgrounds made of snow; there’s something fun to do for all ages! Check out a full schedule of events here.

2. Skate the Rideau Canal

Every winter people come from all over the country to ice skate on the Rideau Canal. The UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest naturally frozen ice rink in the country, and stretching 7.8km long. Heated change huts, skate rental shacks, and snack stands with hot chocolate and other winter treats are set up along the canal, and ice skating access is free. Be sure to check daily ice conditions here.

3. Get Sporty at Gatineau Park

Gatineau Park is well-known for winter activities. The conservation area offers over 200 km of cross country skiing trails that are ideal for beginners and families. More adventurous types can enjoy one of the specially designed forested trails for snowshoeing and winter hiking. For the true winter enthusiasts, winter campsites, yurts, four-season tents, and cabins are available for reservation. Passes to Gatineau Park can be picked up at the Visitor Centre in Chelsea, Quebec.
