Downtown Ottawa’s Elgin Street is the place to exercise your credit card and sample some of the best culinary finds in the city. It’s our pick to do some weekend wandering any time of the year, and these five establishments are just some of the reasons why it’s a street worth exploring.

But First, Coffee – You can start your day on Elgin Street before breakfast and fuel up at The Ministry of Coffee (279 Elgin St.), a staple café in the area offering trendy menu items like Nitrogen Cold Brew Coffee. Come back later for one of their coffee classes like Coffee Cupping or Latte Art, and learn how to impress your guests in your Greystone Village kitchen.

For Weekend Reading – Put down the tablet and head to Perfect Books (258A Elgin St.) to pick up a copy of the next bestseller. Since 1994, they’ve supported local and self-published authors and kept their doors open to a wide-variety of reads.

Treat Yourself – Weekends call for a little extra indulgence and Elgin Street’s Sugar Mountain (286 Elgin St.) candy shop offers everyone’s favourite confectionaries. Fill up a bag with sour keys, candy corn and blueberry cheesecake maltballs to munch on as you continue your tour of the area.

Saturday Night’s Outfit – When you want to upgrade your wardrobe, head to Red Velvet (253 Elgin St.) for a boutique-shopping experience. With Canadian and International designers, the store carries a mix of brands to get you outfitted for where your weekend takes you next.

Dine Out – All this walking is bound to make you hungry, so a stop in at the 24 hour Elgin Street Diner (374 Elgin St.) before heading home is a great way to end off your tour. They are infamous on Elgin St. for their legendary poutine (try it with smoked meat). If that doesn’t tickle your taste buds, try their Chubby Chicken Burger or an Espresso Milkshake.
