The diverse urban community of Greystone Village is taking shape and will soon call Old Ottawa East home. Nestled between the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, this new urban heart is creating a well-integrated community, focused on innovation, sustainable living and connectivity.
Architect of Greystone Village, Gord Lorimer of Barry J. Hobin & Associates shared his thoughts on how the new community will transform the neighbourhood of Old Ottawa East.
Right from the beginning we saw Old Ottawa East as a community fractured by a large missing piece. While the community has many great assets, the largely empty Oblate lands separated northern and southern pockets of the community and hampered Main Street from becoming a viable commercial district. Greystone Village fills in this missing piece resulting in something much more than the development itself. Together the joining of these separate neighbourhoods into one community creates enough critical mass to make things happen that will not occur otherwise.
While Greystone Village integrates and connects two vibrant neighbourhoods, it also creates a diverse and well-integrated community within the development itself. Lorimer says,
Like these abutting neighborhoods where houses of different periods sit side by side, the architectural style is eclectic and there is a wide range of housing types. This will continue to evolve so that Greystone Village will ultimately provide affordable housing and seniors housing as well as the types already in place. This will mean that unlike most other developments, Greystone will be a community where seniors, families and young adults of a wide range of incomes live in the same place. This is how a real integrated community is structured.
With Greystone Village’s goal of creating a lively community and its strong focus on green living and sustainable design, Lorimer points out that the development has received an overwhelming amount of support from the city and the public.
I think that the collaborative process that has resulted with the developer, the community and the City working together harmoniously on a shared vision is pretty well unique in Ottawa… I will never forget when at the completion of an hour and a half public presentation to a crowd of 150 to 200 people how we were met with unbridled applause. That never happens… it means that there are 150 to 200 sales associates working for them without commission. It means that there are purchasers in the local community who want to buy in. It means that difficult approvals are going to be less difficult. And it means that there is no momentum to an appeal.
